what do you think of this quote?

Our greatest pretenses are built up not to hide the evil and the ugly in us, but our emptiness. The hardest thing to hide is something that is not there. - Eric Hoffer

  1. i like this a lot... the last bit most especially.. ah, so good. part of me immediately wants to say "evil and ugly ARE emptiness" -- but part of me wants to argue that and say that emptiness is so much more tragic/dangerous/deceiving -- it's like when i watched American History X and came away thinking "well at least he believed in something strongly enough to advocate/act on it .. (even if it was evil) .. better than sitting around apathetically and aimlessly like a breathing corpse." (this being an obvious extreme to apply the quote content to) hmm... but yeah.. this also reminds me of a sermon (i think this was from "floozy church" with logan even, good coincidence), where lying was extrapolated to apply to things like "when you laugh when you didn't get the joke" -- so interesting that we should be so much more meticulous about hiding these voids in ourselves than about disguising the evil & ugly that daily taints our words and actions.. like housewives offering drinks in dirty glasses, distracted by the weight of the skeleton keys in our aprons that keep the doors of bare rooms shut fast..
